Important Financial Considerations

When considering a self-build construction loan, a good rule of thumb—though not always required—is to have at least 20% of the total project cost (land + build) available. Additionally, lenders typically look for 10–15% of the total project price in reserves after closing. Borrowers with fewer liquid assets may find it more difficult to qualify, as adequate reserves provide a financial buffer for unexpected expenses during construction.
